Elizabethen England

The Elizabethan Era was between 1558-1603 during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

During this time people began to explore different parts of the world and educate themselves with others culture. They travelled to places such as Spain, Portugal and parts of America, they mostly went to these places to dig for wealthy metals like gold and claim land. They made a lot of enemies while doing this because to claim land they often had to take it from previous settlers such as Native American's. one of the most well known explorers is Sir Francis Drake, he was famous for his voyage around the world between 1577-1580.
Also Sir Raleigh who discovered Guiana and established the Virginia colony of Roanoke Island in 158. Because other countries like France and Spain were also interested in exploring the new world England had made itself vulnerable to invasion from them.
Queen Elizabeth highly encouraged the exploration voyages and if they had the chance English ships would raid Spanish ships and this would be approved of by the queen. She was so eager for England to be the first to have more things from newly discovered countries she would willingly make enemies with neighbouring countries for it.

The population of England during the Elizabethan times were extremely susceptible to illness and death because medicine was very basic. Plague was a very common disease and killed about one third of the population. The cause for most of the illness was due to the fact there were open sewers and the was little to no sanitation. Many women died during childbirth due to no sanitation.

Wealth and the social hierarchy was extremely important to people during the Elizabethan Era, especially in their family life. The main exception to his was religion. During Queen Elizabeth's reign the main religion was Protestant. There was still a lot of controversy surrounding this subject because there were Catholics who wanted Mary Queen of Scots to be on the throne, she was under threat of being assassinated.
